Hire movers or removalists
Whole house moves, single items, and labor-only help to load your own truck. Describe the move once and verified local movers can answer.
A move goes well when everyone knew the size of it beforehand. An inventory, the stairs at both ends and where the truck can park decide the price more than the distance does.
If you are renting a truck or container yourself, labor-only help is often the cheapest way to avoid the heavy lifting. Our guide to labor-only movers explains how it works.
What movers on Taskovery do
- House and apartment moves
- Labor-only loading and unloading of your own truck or container
- Single items: sofas, appliances, pianos with the right equipment
- Furniture removal and delivery
- Packing and unpacking help
What to put in your job post
- An inventory, or at least the number of bedrooms and the big items
- Both addresses, with stairs, lifts and parking at each
- The date, and whether it can move
- Whether you need a truck, or labor only
- Anything fragile, very heavy or valuable
License rules and checks, by country
Moving is lightly regulated in most of the six countries, with one important exception in the United States.
- United States: Movers that carry household goods between states must be registered with the federal motor carrier regulator and have a USDOT number. The FMCSA’s Protect Your Move explains what to check. Moves within a state follow that state’s rules.
- Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand: Removals are not a licensed trade. The check that matters is insurance, including cover for your belongings in transit, and what the mover pays if something is damaged.
Whatever the rules, look the number up yourself on the regulator’s own site rather than following a link the contractor sends. How to check a license and insurance walks through it.
How pricing works
Local moves are usually charged by the hour for a crew and a truck, with a minimum of two or three hours. Labor-only crews charge per mover, per hour. Long-distance moves are quoted by volume or weight and distance.
Get the hourly rate, the minimum, when the clock starts and stops, and what counts as an extra in writing. Our labor-only guide has published hourly rates for the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia.
How it works on Taskovery
- Post the job for free. Say what needs doing, where, and when. Photos help more than anything else.
- Hear from verified contractors. Only contractors whose checks have passed can answer: a government photo ID, plus a business registration for a company or a proof of address for a sole trader. It is not a criminal background check and we do not check insurance, so ask for those yourself when the job calls for them.
- Choose who does it. Compare replies, profiles and past work, and pick the person you want.
- Pay them directly. You agree the price with the contractor and pay them, not us. Customers never pay Taskovery anything.

Questions
Questions people ask about hiring movers
Labor only or full service?
Labor only is usually cheaper if you can drive the truck and pack yourself. Full service makes sense for a larger home, a long distance, or when your time is worth more than the difference.
Are my things insured during the move?
Only as far as the mover’s cover and your agreement say. Ask what they pay if something is damaged, get it in writing, and photograph anything valuable before it is lifted.
How far ahead should I book?
As early as you can for the end of the month and weekends, which are the busiest and dearest times. A mid-week, mid-month move is usually easier to book and can cost less.
