Find a mechanic
Servicing, brakes, batteries, diagnostics and pre-purchase inspections, at a workshop or at your home. Post the car and the problem once and verified local mechanics can answer.
The make, model, year and the exact symptom are what a mechanic needs to give you a useful reply. A warning light with its code, or a noise you can describe, narrows a lot down.
Mobile mechanics come to you for servicing and many repairs, which saves the trip to a workshop.

License rules and checks, by country
Rules for mechanics vary a great deal between and within countries.
- Australia: Some states license motor vehicle repairers, for example New South Wales through NSW Fair Trading.
- United States: Some states register auto repair businesses, for example California.
- New Zealand: Warrant of Fitness inspections can only be done by inspectors authorized by the transport agency.
- Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland: There is no general license for mechanics. Ask about qualifications and warranty on the work, and get the quote in writing.
Whatever the rules, look the number up yourself on the regulator’s own site rather than following a link the contractor sends. How to check a license and insurance walks through it.
How pricing works
Mechanics charge an hourly labor rate plus parts, and many price servicing as a fixed package. Diagnostics are often charged as a set fee.
Ask whether parts are new, genuine or aftermarket, and what warranty comes with the parts and the labor.
How it works on Taskovery
- Post the job for free. Say what needs doing, where, and when. Photos help more than anything else.
- Hear from verified contractors. Only contractors whose checks have passed can answer: a government photo ID, plus a business registration for a company or a proof of address for a sole trader. It is not a criminal background check and we do not check insurance, so ask for those yourself when the job calls for them.
- Choose who does it. Compare replies, profiles and past work, and pick the person you want.
- Pay them directly. You agree the price with the contractor and pay them, not us. Customers never pay Taskovery anything.

Questions
Questions people ask about hiring a mechanic
Can a mobile mechanic service my car at home?
Usually, yes. Routine servicing, brakes, batteries and many repairs can be done in a driveway. Jobs that need a hoist or specialist equipment still need a workshop.
Will an independent service affect my warranty?
In many countries, servicing by an independent mechanic does not void a new car warranty if the work follows the manufacturer’s schedule and uses suitable parts. Check your warranty booklet and keep the receipts.
Is a pre-purchase inspection worth it?
For a used car, almost always. It costs far less than the problems it can find, and it gives you something to negotiate with.
