Furniture Assembly Cost: What You'll Pay and What to Expect

What furniture assembly costs in the US, UK and Australia, what to check before you book, and why anchoring matters. Plus how to hire someone near you.

Assembly instructions, a hammer, screwdrivers and fittings on a half-built chest of drawers

Flat pack is cheap because you are the factory's last step. That trade is fine for a bedside table and much less fine for a wardrobe with fourteen panels, which is why people book a furniture assembly service to put it together at home after one bad Sunday with a hex key and a diagram of a smiling stick figure.

Would rather not build it yourself? You can hire someone to assemble furniture near you: post the job free on Taskovery and hear from verified local assemblers.

Hiring it out is straightforward once you know how assembly is priced, what the price leaves out, and which part of the job actually matters. That last one is not speed. It is whether the finished piece is anchored to the wall, because a tall chest that is not fixed is the one thing in this article that can hurt somebody. Whoever you book, the full hiring checklist still applies.

What an assembly service does

Most assemblers price per item. They arrive with their own tools, unpack the boxes, build the piece where it will stand, check the doors and drawers line up, and take the debris to your bin if you ask nicely.

What is often excluded is worth knowing before you book: hauling the packaging away, mounting or anchoring the piece to the wall, moving existing furniture out of the way, and same day service. Wall fixing in particular is sometimes quoted separately, because it means drilling into somebody's wall and being sure what is behind it.

Anything modular is a different scale of job. Wardrobe systems, bunk beds, murphy beds, closet organizers and office systems have more parts, more steps and more chances to build a panel the wrong way round, and they are priced accordingly.

Ask about timing as well as price. A bedside table or a simple desk is usually under an hour, a bed frame or a six drawer chest is an hour or two, and a wardrobe or a bunk bed can take most of a morning for one person. Say how many boxes are waiting before anybody quotes a slot, because three wardrobes is a day and two nightstands is a coffee break.

Five minutes before you book

Open the boxes and check the parts against the manual. Missing hardware is the most common reason a booked visit turns into a second visit, and the manufacturer can usually courier a fitting pack faster than you can rebook a person.

Measure the space where the piece will live, then measure the doorway, the stair turn and the elevator if the item is being built somewhere other than where the boxes are sitting. Some pieces cannot be built in one room and carried to another.

Clear the area, protect the floor, and decide where it goes before anybody arrives. An assembler standing in a hallway while you decide between two walls is being paid to wait.

What it costs to assemble furniture at home

Expect a price per item, with simple pieces at the bottom of the range and wardrobes, bunk beds and modular systems well above it. Most assemblers set a minimum charge, so a single bedside table costs about the same as two or three small items done in the same visit. Bundle your pieces and book them together.

AustraliaA$120 to A$250 for a furniture assembly job, depending on the size and complexity of the itemAirtasker, June 2026

For Canada, Ireland and New Zealand we have not found a reliable published figure for assembly on its own. It is normally charged at the local handyman rate, which is in our guide to hiring a handyman.

These are published averages, checked in October 2026. They leave out materials, and the city, how urgent the job is and how easy it is to get to move the number more than anything else. Use them to sense-check a quote, not to argue a fair one down.

Ask what the quote includes. The usual add ons are wall anchoring, packaging removal, disassembly of old furniture, an evening or weekend slot, and rush service. Ask who supplies the wall fixings, because the anchors that come in the box are rarely right for every wall type and better ones cost very little.

If you have other small jobs to add to the same visit, it is often cheaper to book a handyman for a half day and work through all of it, and hiring a handyman is simple once the list exists. To have people quote your actual list, post the job with the item names and how many there are.

Anchoring is the part that matters

Furniture tip-overs injure and kill children, which is why the US STURDY Act standard took effect in 2023 for clothing storage units such as dressers and armoires. It sets stability requirements and requires anchoring kits to be included with the furniture. Those kits only work when somebody actually uses them, and regulators such as Health Canada and Product Safety Australia give the same advice elsewhere: anchor it.

Anchor anything tall, top heavy, or interesting to a climbing toddler: dressers, bookcases, wardrobes, tall shelving and televisions. Anchors should go into a wall stud, or into masonry with the right plug, not into plasterboard alone with the plastic wedge from the bag. If you rent, this is still worth doing, because two small holes filled at move out cost far less than the alternative.

Say at booking that you want the pieces anchored. It adds a few minutes per item and it is the only part of this job with a safety standard behind it.

Missing parts, stripped holes and other flat pack problems

Damaged panels and missing hardware are the manufacturer's problem and are usually replaced free, but only if you keep the box label, the model number and the receipt. Photograph the damage before anything goes in the recycling.

Two mistakes cause most wobbly results. Overtightening cam locks and screws strips the particle board, and once a hole is stripped the fix is wood glue and a dowel rather than a longer screw. Building on carpet also racks a frame out of square, so a flat floor or a sheet of board underneath helps more than people think.

Keep the manual and the leftover fittings in a labelled bag inside a drawer. Flat pack furniture is the one kind you will take apart again next time you move, and the manual is what makes that possible.

Build the piece in the room it will live in whenever the instructions allow it. A finished wardrobe rarely fits back through the door it came in through, and taking a built carcass apart again weakens every fitting in it.

When flat pack needs another trade

Some assembly jobs quietly become somebody else's work. A vanity unit that connects to water needs a plumber for the final connection. A lit mirror, a cooker hood or an integrated appliance needs an electrician if there is no existing outlet in the right place. Heavy items going up two flights need movers, not an assembler on their own.

Wall mounting into tile, brick or concrete needs the right drill and the right fixings, and a large television needs a mount rated for its weight fixed into structure. If an assembler says a wall will not take the load, listen to them.

Weight is the other limit. Carrying boxes upstairs is not part of an assembly booking unless you agreed it, and a delivery abandoned in a lobby is a common reason a booked visit fails. If the boxes have to travel before they can be built, arrange that separately: labor only moving help is the cheapest way to get heavy flat pack to the right floor.

Questions to ask when you book

A two minute call settles all of these:

  • Is the price per item or by the hour, and is there a minimum
  • Does it include anchoring the piece to the wall
  • Do you take the packaging away, and is that extra
  • What happens if a part is missing or damaged when you open the box
  • Do you carry insurance if something is damaged during the build
  • How long do you expect my list to take, and can it all be done in one visit

Ask for the total before the work starts, and keep the invoice with the manuals. For the questions that work for any trade in your home, see what to ask before you book anyone.

After it is built

Open every drawer and door before the assembler leaves. Hinges and drawer runners are adjustable, and it takes them a minute now and you a frustrating hour later. Check that the piece sits level, that shelves are pinned, and that the anchor is in place and tight.

Questions people ask about furniture assembly

How much does furniture assembly cost?

Most assemblers charge by the hour or by the item, with a minimum charge per visit. The table above has the published figures for the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. Wardrobes, bunk beds and modular systems sit at the top of any range, and a single small piece usually costs the minimum.

How long does it take to assemble flat pack furniture?

Checkatrade's guide prices a flat pack assembly job of two to four hours at about £90, which tells you the usual size of a visit. Small tables and chairs take far less, large wardrobes and sliding door systems take more, and two people are faster on anything tall.

Will the assembler fix furniture to the wall?

Ask, because anchoring is often priced as an extra, and say what your walls are made of. For anything tall in a home with children, it is the part of the job that matters most, as the anchoring section above explains.

Do I need to be home?

For the start and the end, yes: to show where each piece goes, and to check every door and drawer before they leave. In between, agree access the same way you would for any trade.

Go round the screws again after a week, because new furniture settles and a small tighten prevents the slow wobble that ends in a stripped hole. Keep the leftover fittings, note the model number somewhere, and add anything that still needs doing to the running list for the next visit. Flat pack is only cheap when it stays standing.
