House cleaning rates in Australia and New Zealand are mostly quoted by the hour for regular cleans and as a fixed price for end of lease and deep cleans. This guide sets out the published figures for both countries, what changes them, and how to agree a price that holds.

Australia

Airtasker’s house cleaning guide, last updated in August 2026, says self-employed house cleaners generally charge A$55 to A$90 an hour, because their rate has to cover tax, insurance, travel, supplies and equipment as well as their time. It puts end of lease and move-in cleans at A$200 to A$850, depending on the size and condition of the home.

Ask whether a quote includes GST, which is 10%, and whether supplies and equipment are included.

These are published figures, checked in October 2026. They are a guide to sense-check a quote, not a price for your job: location, access, urgency and the condition of what is being fixed move the number more than anything else.

What moves the price

Size, the number of bathrooms, the condition on the day, the extras and how often you book move the price most. Regular weekly or fortnightly visits cost less per visit than one-offs, and a first deep clean often costs two or three times a regular visit. Ovens, refrigerators, inside windows and walls are usually extras.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Book a regular slot. Weekly or fortnightly cleans are shorter and cheaper per visit than one-offs.
  • Do one deep clean, then switch to regular visits, rather than paying for a deep clean every time.
  • Tidy before the cleaner arrives. A cleaner paid by the hour who spends it picking things up is not cleaning.
  • Agree the extras in writing, so the oven and the windows are only done, and charged, when you want them.

Checks before work starts

Cleaning is not a licensed trade in either country, so the checks that matter are insurance for damage in your home, a written list of what is included, and clear arrangements for keys and access. For an end of lease clean, give the cleaner your lease’s checklist rather than a general idea of clean. Our guide to hiring a cleaner for an apartment covers the rest.

How to get an accurate price

Describe the job once, with photos, the address area and when you need it done, and ask two or three people to price the same thing. Then compare the quotes line by line, because the cheapest number often describes a smaller job. On Taskovery you can post a cleaning job for free and hear from verified local contractors, then choose who does it and pay through Taskovery, held until the job is done.
