Handyman Rates in Australia and New Zealand (2026)
What a handyman costs in Australia and New Zealand in 2026: hourly rates, per-task prices by city, call-out fees, and what moves the number.

Handyman rates in Australia and New Zealand are quoted three ways: by the hour, by the task, and by the half or full day. Knowing which one you are being offered, and what a fair figure looks like for each, is most of what it takes to hire well. This guide sets out the published figures for both countries, what moves them, and how to get a price you can trust.

| Average completed task | A$180 to A$280 | Airtasker, June 2026 |
| Sydney, per task | A$240 to A$320 | Airtasker, June 2026 |

Airtasker’s guide also prices common tasks: hanging pictures or mirrors at A$80 to A$150, furniture assembly at A$120 to A$250, and TV mounting at A$150 to A$300. Ask whether a quote includes GST, which is 10%.
New Zealand
We have not found a reliable published national figure for handyman rates in New Zealand. The closest is Airtasker’s Auckland handyman tasks, which ranged from NZ$100 to NZ$300 a task, with a median of NZ$150, from a small number of jobs. Treat that as a rough guide only.
In practice, most New Zealand handymen charge by the hour with a minimum, or a fixed price for a well-defined task. Trade rates are often quoted plus GST, which is 15%, so ask for the total.
These are published figures, checked in October 2026. They are a guide to sense-check a quote, not a price for your job: location, access, urgency and the condition of what is being fixed move the number more than anything else.
What moves the price
Travel and parking, the minimum charge, waiting for access, a trip to buy materials, disposal of the old item, and finding that a wall is plaster rather than plasterboard all add time. A list of several small jobs in one visit is almost always cheaper per job than separate call-outs. Agree that anything beyond the list is priced before it starts.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Save the small jobs into one list. One visit for six jobs costs far less than six call-outs, because the minimum charge and the travel are paid once.
- Buy the parts yourself if you know exactly what you want, and say so in the post, so nobody quotes a supply run.
- Send photos and measurements first. A handyman who has seen the job can give a fixed price instead of an open-ended hourly one.
- Clear the work area before they arrive. Time spent moving furniture is time you pay for.
Checks before work starts
Small handyman jobs need no license in either country, but electrical, gas and most plumbing work does, and in New Zealand restricted building work must be done or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner. Ask about insurance for anything that could damage your home. Our guide to hiring a handyman covers the checks in full.
How to get an accurate price
Describe the job once, with photos, the address area and when you need it done, and ask two or three people to price the same thing. Then compare the quotes line by line, because the cheapest number often describes a smaller job. On Taskovery you can post a handyman job for free and hear from verified local contractors, then choose who does it and pay them directly.
